The people behind your payslip
National Payroll Week runs from 7 to 11 September 2026.
Here is a number worth knowing. £474 billion. That is what UK payroll collects every year in income tax and National Insurance, according to the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals, based on HMRC receipts. It is a large enough number to sound like it happens by itself. It does not. It happens because thousands of people across the country sit down every month, work out what everybody is owed, check it, check it again, and press submit before the deadline. National Payroll Week exists to say thank you to those people. So this year, rather than write about legislation, we want to introduce you to ours.Nobody emails to say their pay arrived
Payroll is one of the few jobs where doing it perfectly is completely invisible. If your team is paid the right amount on the right day, nothing happens. No email, no thank you, no acknowledgement that anybody did anything at all. The only feedback loop in payroll is the negative one. People get in touch when something is wrong, and they are right to, because the person who feels a payroll error first is the person who needed that money for the rent.So the standard is quietly brutal. Get it right and nobody notices. Get it wrong and somebody’s month is ruined.
The people who choose to do that for a living, year after year, are a particular sort of person. Careful. Unflappable in the last hour before a deadline. Genuinely bothered when a number does not reconcile, even by pennies. We have eight of them.Meet the team
Chris Jones
Payroll Manager.
Chris runs payroll operations day to day and is usually the person on the other end when something complicated lands. He joined us in April 2023 and is a CIPP Associate. One of our clients, Jonathan at Catling Bakery, once left us a review specifically because of him: “Chris especially today was so helpful and professional it has made me write this 5 star review.” That is the effect he tends to have.
Gabriela Fleet
Senior Payroll Specialist.
Gabby is the second pair of hands on payroll operations and the person who steps in when Chris is unavailable. If your payroll has ever run smoothly during a week you did not think about, there is a reasonable chance Gabby is the reason.
Eloise Johnstone
Payroll Specialist.
Ellie is one of the names our clients use most often when they talk about us. Sian at PB Talent Group put it this way: “Communication from Minhaz, Ellie and other team members is fast, responsive, clear and concise.” Clear and concise is harder than it sounds in payroll. Ellie makes it look easy.
Shannon Croft
Payroll Specialist.
Shannon rejoined us in January this year, which tells you something about the place and something about her. She works across onboarding and processing, and new clients coming across from another provider will often deal with her first.
Samira Rahman
Payroll Specialist.
Samira is away from the team at the moment. She is still very much part of it, and we are looking forward to having her back.
Millie McGee
Finance Specialist.
Millie handles the money side of the business, from invoicing through to the reporting that tells us whether we are actually running things well. She stepped up into a much bigger role this year and has been excellent in it.
Salim Sayed
Marketing Director.
Salim joined in January 2021 and is the reason you are reading this at all. He is also the person who keeps insisting we only ever claim things we can prove, which is a rarer quality in marketing than it should be.
Minhaz Moosa
Founder.
Minhaz started the business in January 2018 after several years in payroll at BDO and in accountancy practice. He still takes client calls, still gets involved in the complicated cases, and is named in more of our reviews than anyone else.
What they have been working on
It has not been a quiet year. Payrolling of benefits in kind becomes mandatory from April 2027, which is the biggest change to UK payroll since Real Time Information arrived in 2013. Company cars, private medical cover, gym memberships and loans move out of the annual P11D and into every pay run, taxed in real time. The team has spent a good part of this year getting ready for it, so that our clients are not scrambling in the spring of 2027. If you provide benefits to your staff and you have not thought about this yet, that is fine. We have. One small ask
If you have a payroll person, whether they work for you, for us, or somewhere else entirely, tell them they are doing a good job this week. It costs nothing and they will have heard it roughly never. And if there is something about your own payroll that has been nagging at you, ask us. Benefits, pensions, a scheme that does not look right, or a question you feel you should already know the answer to. There is no such thing as a stupid payroll question and we are not going to charge you for asking one.Email hello@intelligentpayroll.co.uk or call 0161 524 7696. Somebody named above will come back to you, usually well within the day.
Minhaz will be at the Sky Garden in London on Monday 7 September for the National Payroll Week celebration, and at the Payroll Services Summit at Glaziers Hall on the Tuesday. If you are there, come and find him.Intelligent Payroll is an HMRC Authorised Tax Advisor and a Cyber Essentials certified UK payroll bureau based in Manchester. We work on 30 day rolling contracts.
